Mac Demarco is a singer-songwriter from British Colombia, Canada. After being in a number of different bands growing up, he turned solo when he moved to Montreal in 2011.
He has been prolific in his relatively short solo career. 'Another One' is Demarco's fourth studio album, after 'Rock and Roll Night Club', '2' and 'Salad Days'. Mac Demarco is known for his laid back musical style, touted by some as 'slacker rock'.
The album begins with the track 'The Way You Love Her'. This track has all the elements of Mac's regular sound and is a good point to set the rest of the album up. This opening track is by no means one of his best though. The next track, 'Another One' is perhaps my favorite on the album with it's catchy guitar riffs and vocals. This sound is carried over to 'No Other Heart' which has dreamy guitars that are a joy to listen to.
'A Heart Like Hers' marks a slight change in the sound of the album as it slows. This track doesn't sound right to me, the vocals and guitars are a bit too wishy washy meaning the focus of the track just isn't there. This is similar on the next track that has quite a repetitive sound, especially with the lyrics of the chorus. The last two tracks of the album close it off very well. Although the pace doesn't pick up any further, the execution of these track is much better. This is especially the case on 'Without Me' which nails the slow ballad style.
This mini album has mirrored the previous high quality from his other albums. The whole album bounces along in a dreamy manner that's very characteristic of Mac Demarco. This is the kind of music to relax to and think about life and the world. One downside of this album is the length, the running time of around 25 mins feels too short and you end up wanting more from it.
