Review: KNYTE: KNYTE

KNYTE is a alternative solo artist from Edmonton, Alberta (Canada). He has had seen some success in the past from scoring and writing original songs for short films, however he has more of a desire to create things for himself. He has taken lots of inspiration from alternative, electronic and pop/r&b music to shape his sound.

According to KNYTE himself, he has attempted to create a modern art piece where image, sound and writing all fit together. He has written and produced this album himself to try and realise this vision to a greater extent.

The album starts with a track called 'The Sun', it has a cool wobbly intro that's electronic based. His vocals are well executed, and there is a catchy chorus section. This then leads into 'Neon Lights'. For me this track feels a little rushed with the vocals not quite fitting with the instrumental, this is especially the case at the start of the song.

'Voices' is a straightforward, up tempo pop song. The quick tempo and catchy lyrics make for very enjoyable listening. The pace then slows down for 'Fantasy' with its slow, emotional lyrics and minimalist beat. This track is very heartfelt, and feels like a love song for a mystery someone. It then drifts into 'Ruin' which keeps a similar style to the previous track, but has a much more watery sound. It also includes much more distinct guitar and drum parts that I enjoyed.

'Cut Me Open' is my favorite song on the album. He beautifully fuses bluesy guitars, that is very reminiscent of The White Stripes, with his own sound. The deep cutting guitar riffs along with his flowing vocals make this song really memorable. 'Weight' is the second to last song, although the topic of this song is decent (dealing with pressure), I just feel that the lyrics and production aren't as strong as much of the other tracks. This is also the case with the closing track, 'Ocean Blue' which feels a little too washed out.

This is a really good debut album from KNYTE who has a lot of potential. Not all of the potential has been met as of yet, however you can see the quality coming through at various points with good quality production and vocals. I think the overall concept of the album has been met to a certain extent, he has created a flowing album that works well as a body of work.
