Review: Radkey- Dark Black Makeup

Radkey are a garage rock band from Missouri, United States. They formed in 2010 and are made up of the three brothers Dee (vocals/guitar), Isaiah (bass) and Solomon (drums) Radke. Although the band are quite heavy, they like to keep their tracks catchy lyrically and instrumentally.

The guys from the band were home-schooled together and their dad is their manager. In an interview with Noisey, the band explained how being home-schooled helped them to discover "cool muisc". This subsequently inspired them to form their own band.

The album begins with title track, 'Dark Black Makeup'. This track is lively and has a catchy chorus, I also like the multitude of layers that build up then break back down again at different points. It then transitions into the thunderous opening riff of 'Romance Dawn', before the vocals and main instrumental body of the track kick in. This track is faster than the previous track, making it feel much shorter than its 4 minute running time. The next track, 'Love Spills' is probably my favourite track on the album, it has succulent vocals and Arctic Monkeys style guitar riffs that are near perfect. The only bad thing I can say about this track is that I wish it was longer.

'Parade It' is another strong track, although I do find that chorus a bit boring and repetitive compared to some of the other tracks. The next track, 'Best Friends', is so simple yet to effective. The way it's put together means it has all the ingredients of a classic rock and roll track. It's quite a hefty task to take all these ingredients and make a good quality track, but the band do it perfectly. The subsequent track, 'Le Song' is a short punk rock song that I don't think encapsulates the band at their best, it feels quite poorly put together. I do like the guitar solo towards the end of the track though.

'Hunger Pain' slows the album down considerably, this is a nice track with a melancholy vibe to it. Although technically the track is well executed, it doesn't seem to have as much soul and meaning to is than other songs from the band. 'Feed My Brain' was the first track I head from the band, this fact may have caused it to stick with me more, but I really like the vocals on the chorus. They are both brooding and catchy at the same time. 'Song of Solomon' and 'Evil Door' are both speedy tracks that make so much noise that they rock your insides. Despite the power of the guitars and drums, the vocals don't get lost, and they only strengthen the sound further.

The closing track on this album leaves you on a very good note, with more big riffs and flowing lyrics. It just shows you the capability and talent that they have, and makes you want to listen from the start again. I really like this album and its youthful energy. It has riffs of the highest quality and Dee's vocals simply draw you in. The album is really well produced and works really well as a complete piece, flowing from one track to another. There are only a few tracks on this album that prevent it getting a perfect score.
