Who is she?
Courtney Barnett is singer-songwriter from Melbourne, Australia. She was a member of a garage grunge band ('Rapid Transit') and a psych/country band ('Immigrant Union'). She then starting her own record label, Milk! Records, to release her debut EP. The genres of her previous bands can be heard in the makeup of her solo music.
In an interview with The Guardian she revealed that she didn't start singing until she was 19 because it was too 'scary'. this anxiety coupled with bouts of depression has been mentioned in songs from Barnett in the past.
What's her style of play?
She has a very effortless sounding style of play with lyrics that seem to ramble on. This isn't actually the case though, with lyrics being carefully carved to explicitly tell a story. The stories she writes are about everyday situations, emotions and happenings that are very relatable.
What's happened so far this year for Barnett?
This year has been a big one for her as she released her debut album to wide spread critical acclaim in Australia, North America and the UK. Barnett has also enjoyed increased exposure with interviews from NME and The Guardian and play time on BBC Radio 1. It looks as though she'll only gain more notoriety in the future as her fan base grows and the amount of material she has increases.
