I spoke to Alice, the lead singer of Virginia Wing, an upcoming band from Camberwell, South London.
"There is no interesting answer for this question I'm afraid. We knew each other through music, had been friends for a while and decided to start making music together. Other members have come and gone but it's always remained the three of us."
How would you describe your sound?
"When people ask me what kind of music I make, I say "electronic music" for ease but I suppose that's not really representative. I guess it's just weird pop music."
Describe the process behind writing one of your tracks.
"Every song starts off as some fragmented demo made by Sam or myself. Usually based around a sample or a recording or just something we've been playing around with. Then the other person has their input and shapes it a little more. Most songs properly form when we're recording in the studio and we can figure out all those last little details."
Do you have any favorite songs to play live?
"I like the metamorphosis a song goes through when you try to represent a recorded song live. We're not a plug-in-and-play kind of band, we don't really jam, all our songs are quite structured (although they may not often seem it) so it's fun to mess that structure around, especially as it's nearly impossible to perfectly re-create the majority of our songs live. Currently I enjoy playing 'Feierabend' a song off our first EP live, as we end it with loud synth drones and it's all loose and chaotic."
Where has the best crowd reception been for a live show?
Measures of Joy LP. |
Do you have any advice for people who want to start a band?
"My advice would be just to be creative, experiment. You don't have to be an incredible guitarist before you write a song, you don't (have) to play piano to play a synthesiser. Just enjoy the process and don't be concerned with how things "should" sound."
