Review: The Chemical Brothers- Born In The Echoes

The Chemical Brothers are made up of Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons, who formed in Manchester in 1989. They are now on their 8th studio album after enjoying wide spread acclaim over the years for their contribution to dance music. Their contribution to the genre has been noted with the awarding of four Grammy award and one Brit award so far.

Their roots come from breakbeat hardcore and big beat, however their sound has evolved with each album as they've embraced new trends in music. They are well renounced for their live show theatrics including lasers and large scale graphics that fit well with the music and are designed to entrance the audience.

This new album has all the energy and production quality of previous albums, but also somehow feels up to date. The lead singles from the album are 'Sometimes I Feel so Deserted' and 'Go', which are also the first two tracks on the album. The former is a decent start track to the album that really sets up 'Go' which has a great beat and a really catchy hook.

The next track on the album is 'Under the Neon Lights' which is very monotonous, this is enjoyable at first however I just find myself getting a bit bored. This is followed by perhaps my favorite song on the album in 'EML Ritual', this has a really good beat and vocal sample that works well. After this point the album goes into a big beat melting pot where it's easy to get lost on what track you're actually listening to. One highlight track of this section of the album that kind of breaks up the monotony is 'Taste of Honey' that literally sounds like eating honey with it's slick beat and vocals. The end of the album is slower and more relaxed than the rest, with 'Radiate' and 'Wide Open' sounding a lot more melancholy, offering a fitting conclusion.

This album has lots of highlight tracks for me. It's production value is higher than many other current EDM tracks. Born in the Echoes makes me want to go and find the nearest dance floor. There are however many points were I found the repetitive beats too much and just switched off a bit. Although I enjoyed listening to the album, I can't help but think that it was designed for people who are off their face and maybe my rating would be higher if I was at the time of listening.

Highs:
Go
EML Ritual
